TOUR 8

4D/3N – Tarapoto to San Lorenzo del Marañón – Amazon Lowlands

DAY 1

Breakfast and departure from Tarapoto by plane to San Lorenzo (approx. 1 hour). Overnight at the Posada del Apu (basic room with fan and bathroom). Lunch. In the afternoon, local transportation (Motokar) to a nearby area. Dinner and overnight.

Possible birds: Green-tailed Goldenthroat, Black-banded Crake, Lunnulated Antbird, etc.


DAY 2 – San Lorenzo – Puente Machete

Breakfast at 5:15 a.m. and then departure by motokar to Machete Bridge (20 minutes) to explore a 300 meter trail, where we will look for White-masked Antbird and other species. Box Lunch. Dinner in San Lorenzo.

Possible birds: White-masked Antbird, Yellow-billed Jacamar, Red-bellied Macaw, Black-banded Woodcreeper, Blue-crowned Manakin, White-crowned Manakin, White-browed Purpletuft, Cinnamon Manakin-tyrant, Black-necked Red-Cotinga, Collared Puffbird, Spotted Puffbird, Royal Flycatcher, Citron-bellied Attila, White-chested Swift, Stipple-throated Antwren, White-eyed Antwren, Brown-backed Antwren, Slate-colored Hawk, Bare-necked Fruitcrow.


DAY 3 – San Lorenzo – Quebrada Sabalo

Breakfast at 5:15 a.m. and departure towards Sábalo creek, exploring several spots along the creek searching for some gallery forest birds. Walk along a local trail at town of San Juan de Sábalo village, looking for some other lowland species. Box lunch. Dinner at San Lorenzo.

Possible birds: Black-tailed Trogon, Epaulet Oriole, Hooded Tanager, Silvered Antbird, Maroon-tailed Parakeet, Paradise Jacamar, Golden-green Woodpecker, Tiny Hawk, White-eared Puffbird, Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture, Moriche Oriole, Black Bushbird, Purple-throated Fruitcrow, White-crowned Manakin, Amazonian Motmot, Glittering-throated Emerald, Striped Manakin, Spotted Puffbird, Great Jacamar, Plain-crowned Spinetail, Green Oropendola.


DAY 4 – San Lorenzo to Tarapoto

Breakfast, transfer to airport and flight back to Tarapoto. Local birding at Ricuricocha lagoon.

Possible birds: Black-bellied whistling duck, Comb duck, Speckled chachalaca, Least grebe, Cocoi heron, Great egret, Limpkin, Striated heron, Pearl kite, Snail kite, Purple gallinule, Wattled jacana, Blue ground-dove, Canary-winged parakeet, Red-stained woodpecker, Straight-billed woodcreeper, Barred antshrike, Rusty-fronted tody-flycatcher, & maybe some crakes and rails.
